Go to a perfoemance

On May first, some of our GCA students went to a piano concert together, in 10-F, Jack, Kevin and I went there. The location of the concert was in Nanjing Culture and Art Center, Changjiang Road. I arrived there at 7:20 pm and the concert started at 7:30 pm. The performer’s name was Wenyu Shen, also he was called” Chinese Piano Genius” by judges and audience.
I chose to go to this concert because I am always crazy about pianos. Although I cannot play piano by myself, I love to listen to others. Sometimes I play piano CDs while doing my homework or having supper, music create a harmonious and elegant atmosphere, and plays a leading role in my home.
I thought the performance was really fascinating because Wenyu Shen’s playing skills had attained a high degree of perfection. We could hear the rhythm of music changed very fast but we can saw his hands clearly. His fingers were like many bees flying busily on the keyboard. It was so amazing that the performance not only catch our ears but also our eyes. All the audience there were silent and enjoyed it attentively. After each song he played, we clapped resonantly.
I found music really can change a person. It can make children stop playing and keep quiet; It can lead teenagers to be ambitious and set long-term goals. It can relieve the heavy pressure that press on middle age people. Also it can let senior people to recall the old stories happened on them.
This concert left me very deep impression, it is sure that I am a fan of music now.

Participate in a Service Activity organized by a GCA teacher

Our Planning teacher organized an activity about making western desserts by ourselves. I joined this activity because I am always fond of making food. Not only is the process of making food interesting, but tasting the products also a fantastic enjoyment.
The time and location of this activity was on 11th of April, from 9 to 11 am. Our group members were Winona, Peter, me and students from other classes. Our group’s task was making pancakes and our leading teacher was Ms. Hadley.
First we followed the instructions to mix all the materials of correct amount in order. Then the most exciting time came, which was actually cooking them. However, we did not make the real pancakes that day, the problems we faced made each of us very sad and frustrated. At the beginning, we found the pot of us is made of aluminum, it cannot conduct heat well. We waited and waited until another group to finish their cooking. An hour past and finally one group completed their tasks successfully. With a little jealous, we hurried up and try to cook our precious and valuable pancakes. This pot could conduct heat well, but however, we realized the mixture of pancake materials stuck on the bottom of the pot and could not move. When Ms.Hadley announced we could not make the real pancakes that day, all of our group members including me were silent. The mixture in front of us which we made carefully more than carefully became worthless. Our time and effort was wasted. All of us went home in a terrible mood. Fortunately, on another day, after our meticulous thinking and preparing, we did make the pancakes successfully.
That is my entire pancake story, not as interesting as I had before. This complicated experience let me think of a Chinese idiom called”No rain, no rainbow.” which means we will have a hard time before the good results coming.

Volunteer Work

On 14th of March, some Danish teachers along with their students came to NFLS, I was one of the members who volunteered to treat them.
Wendy and I were in a same group, our work was to introduce the whole school and our general school life to the Danish teachers. We represented not only GCA students but also Chinese students. So the responsibility on us was huge.
We showed them the residence hall, gym, cafeteria, playground, computer room, and a supermarket opposite to our school. During the introduction, we showed our manners well and acted positively. I think they might have a good impression on us. Wendy even took them to the piano room, played her favorite song “Cannon” which was very elegant to them. Something interesting that happened during the visit was we asked the Danish teachers to teach us some easy and practical Danish words, Wendy and I learned “Thank you”; “You are welcome” and “I love you” in Danish quickly. One of the Danish teachers was surprised and expressed that our pronunciation was like Danish local people.
To make our work efficiently, we needed be polite and easy-going, also cannot delay the main parts because of the failure of one little piece. For example, when we took the Danish teachers to the school dormitory, although we explained our reasons and proposes clearly, the guard still did not let us in. We did not argue with her, gave up quickly, still used our manners and left. After that we went to other places because we needed to visit as many as we can.
During and after this experience, I benefit a lot from it. First and foremost, I practiced my English oral skills and communication abilities. Also, I learned some general ideas and lifestyles about Denmark, a country which I might never been to. Also, I used to have a stereotype in my mind that foreigners are very different from us and it will be difficult to approach them. However, I found in spite of our appearances are a little different, we are all human beings, so do not think people from other countries are far away from us in any aspects of our lives. Since we can communicate with each other, we treated each other fairly and just like friends.
Things I gained about myself were I realized that I can really communicate with people from other countries who speak English by myself, without other’s help. Also, I am so polite when treat people who I do not familiar with. I can overcome my introvert characteristics when it is necessary to speak and introduce something to others.
Wendy and I also went to Nanjing Library to do volunteer work. This time my work was to put messy books back to the bookcases in right places. This work sounds easy, but actually it was quite difficult because there were thousands of books in one reading room. Each book had its own long and regular number. I should found where the general position for the number and then search carefully to find the exact position of the book. Two days, we spent about 8 hours there. This experience made me really exhausted and deeply hated people who did not put their books back to bookcases consciously.

Religion Service

On December the 14th, some of our classmates went to the MoChou Lu Church on MoChou Road. It was Sunday and I arrived there at 1:30 pm. The theme of the religion service was “A Christmas Service”, it was free and talked about Christian. I chose to go to this service because in China, some of us believe in Buddhism but very few people believe in Christian, so I can hardly touch this culture or acquire some knowledge about it. I think before I go aboard, it is necessary to learn some main points about Christian or I might make some mistakes and cause something unpleasant things there.
The vicar told us the stories about Jesus Christ’ mother, something about his birth and other events. I did not like these stories much because I could not understand them completely. Also, since the vicar was a Chinese, his pronunciation was not very professional and made me feel a little bit strange. The service was not just telling stories, to make it more interesting, it also arranged some activities such as let all the audience sing Christian songs together and enjoy western kids’ performances.
After this experience, I know that I must treat western religions seriously especially when I go aboard, for example, the United States is a typical big nation with many religions, 82% of Americans believe in religions, even more, words like “in god we trust” are printed on the American dollars. So, unlike in China, I feel the westerners think religions as a very important part of their lives.
This religion service gave me a total idea of what Christian religions is and let me think about how to deal with religion problems aboard as a Chinese, so it was meaningful and remained me a deep impression.
